David Hull

David Hull is a local Cairns author. He has drawn on his own experiences at the hands of bullies in his debut novel Born Again

David’s book Born Again follows a dark period in the life of Dane, 17, who is abused at school, ignored by teachers, and has no friends. But David has ensured there is a message of hope in his novel.

Even though the book is based on experiences that the author himself had been through, he wants readers who’ve had similar experiences to know that life will work out for them.

There are people out there who care.

Born Again

Born Again is a story about the very real struggles of a teenager, who with the right friends, is lucky enough to be Born Again into a world of compassion, friendship and self confidence.

The novel addresses the mental health challenges adolescent males face in their day-to-day lives. Based on personal experiences but told through fictional characters, David takes the reader on a journey through attempted suicide, bullying, social isolation and awkwardness and sexual awakening.

These particular life challenges are eventually overcome through the solidarity of friendship, psychological counselling, medical intervention and the characters' courage to explore their inner selves and take a stand for their rights as human beings.

*David Hull’s Born Again was originally published by Jabiru Publishing in 2017. I was the editor. I independently re-published a second-edition print book in 2018 via IngramSpark, under a different ISBN, to reach a worldwide audience.

"I put my copy of [Born Again] on the bookshelf in the staffroom. It is a great read about bullying, suicide and mental health. I think [David] was very brave to take on these subjects, and he has done a terrific job. If you have watched or read 13 Reasons Why, this book is a similar read."
